Role:

 

  • To advise the Mayor on all activity to support community safety and to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour, fear of crime and underlying causes. To ensure officers are aware of the priority attached to this area of work by the Mayor.
  • To lead on: Crime and Anti-Social Behaviour activities, Preventing Violent Extremism, supporting community cohesion, CCTV, violence against women and Hate Crime, public nuisance and public protection.
  • To build a detailed knowledge of the diversionary, corrective and enforcement activities within the council and with partners that collectively tackle anti-social behaviour.
  • To ensure the Mayor is fully aware of the local implications of national change in the way services are delivered and managed.
  • To build effective partnerships with the Police, Probation Service, UK Borders Agency, courts and other criminal justice agencies and other relevant groups to ensure that their services reflect local needs, concerns and priorities.
  • To be an advocate for victims of crime.
  • To work with, and deputise for, the Cabinet Member for Environment as needed in order to promote a robust enforcement function across the council.

 

Priorities:

 

  • Alongside the Police, including Safer Neighbourhood Teams, to ensure a visible response to community safety issues.
  • To work with the Cabinet Member for Environment to achieve a coordinated policy response to envirocrime.
  • To guide policies to tackle persistent antisocial behaviour, in particular in terms of illegal street trading enforcement, gang behaviour and littering.
  • To work with the Mayor and the Cabinet Member for Children and Young People to build effective youth intervention strategies.
  • Working with the Police to ensure public protection and ASB action is rigorously enforced and that roles and responsibilities are clear.
  • To ensure active and effective intervention on drugs and alcohol related crime and anti social behaviour.
  • To ensure effective action and intervention is taken regarding gangs and gang violence.
  • To embed and share best practice in tackling crime and anti-social behaviour in Council services.

 

Regular activities:

 

·  To ensure full answers are given to all appropriate questions to Council/the Mayor is able to respond on all reports to Cabinet/Mayoral proceedings.

·  To monitor workload and performance against targets in agreement with the Mayor and to provide regular activity updates to the Mayor.

·  To communicate with officers by mutually agreed methods to ensure timely and appropriate political direction.

·  To work with the Community Executive and Community Lead Councillors to ensure an understanding of community views and to ensure that they are represented in this portfolio remit.

·  To speak at conferences and events as appropriate.

·  To attend scrutiny commissions as necessary to inform on appropriate policies and activities and advise the Mayor on specific responses as and when necessary.

·  To ensure full answers are given to all appropriate questions to Council/the Mayor is able to respond on all reports to Cabinet/Mayoral proceedings/public forums.
