The pan-London Joint Overview
& Scrutiny (JOSC) comprises scrutiny representatives from each
of London’s 33 boroughs (including the Corporation of London)
and the counties surrounding London.
The Committee was first formed
in 2007 and operated until October 2008 to consider a joint
response to a NHS consultation on the principles of Healthcare for London, a report authored by Lord
Ara Darzi
on the redesign of healthcare services in London. The report advocates the establishment of GP-led
“polyclinics”, the specialisation of certain acute
services and a number of other developments aimed at providing
better health services across London.
In October 2008, the Committee
was invited to re-establish itself to respond to a further NHS
consultation on the redesign of acute care services for stroke and
major trauma across the London; based on the agreed principles of
Healthcare for London.
Full Council agreed on 1
December 2008 that Councillor Winston Vaughan, Chair of Health
Scrutiny, would represent Newham on the pan-London Joint Overview
& Scrutiny Committee. Councillor
Ted Sparrowhawk was nominated as his
deputy. The first meeting of the
Committee will take place in February 2009 and it is expected meet
regularly over the next 3 – 4 months to take evidence from
key stakeholders on the details of the consultation. The Committee will formally respond to the NHS
consultation in May / June 2009.
